White sage is a flowering perennial that is native to the Southwestern United States. This plant loves to grow on sunny, arid slopes and has tall woody stems and tiny white flowers. White sage leaves are often rolled into a large bundle and burned as an incense to purify physical spaces.
Used in rituals and ceremonies for centuries, white sage is often burned to create its intended effects. Burning sage is a ritual known as smudging for Native Americans. Smudging is a cleansing ceremony used to help people, places, or even objects get rid of negative energy or even bad spirits. Burning sage has many benefits as a spiritual practice. Some research supports certainhealth benefits of sage, such as antimicrobial properties and enhanced alertness. Burning sage is a sacred religious practice in some Native American cultures. Treat the ritual with respect.
To smudge your house start at the back, or the basement and work your way through the house. I keep all my windows closed and open the front and the back door while saying a cleansing prayer and telling them to get out. It all in your comfort and how you wish to smudge there is no correct or wrong way.
